Avoid Toxic Chemicals: Use Natural Alternatives
Many industrial cleaners contain toxic chemicals that can cause a host of diseases and ailments including cancer. In addition, an increasing number of health studies have found people who use industrial cleaners are at risk for skin and respiratory problems.
Using industrial cleaners that are non-toxic are essential to keeping employees safe today and over the long term. In the past, having an affordable, effective product took precedence over safety concerns.Â
Toxic Chemicals In Cleaning Products
Today there are safe, effective, and affordable alternatives to these toxic chemicals. With the information and alternative products now available, there is no reason to put your employees at risk.
Some of the toxic chemicals frequently present in industrial cleaning products include:
n-propyl bromide (nPB, bromopropane, 1-propyl bromide, 1-bromopropane) – nPB has been determined by the National Toxicology Program as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” CA OSHSB lists nPB as a developmental/reproductive toxicant. Pennsylvania has it on its hazardous substance list.
Trichloroethylene (TCE, 1,1,2-trichloroethane, 1,1-dichloro-2-chloroethylene, 1-chloro-2,2-dichloroethylene, acetylene trichloride, trethylene) – The National Toxicology Program classifies TCE as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” TCE is a carcinogen under California Prop 65. Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, EPA restricted the maximum contaminant level to 0.005 mg/L (5ppb) for TCE. OSHA has set the permissible exposure limit to 100 ppm for TCE. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends an exposure limit of 25 ppm for TCE. California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board has regulated the workplace PEL to 25 ppm for TCE. The professional association for industrial hygienists known as the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists has recommended a threshold limit value of 10 ppm for TCE.
Perchloroethylene (Perc, perchloroethene, tetrachloroethylene, PCE) – The National Toxicology Program classifies Perc as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” Perc, is listed as a carcinogen under California Prop 65. Perc is an animal carcinogen by ACGIH. Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, EPA restricted the maximum contaminant level to 0.005 mg/L (5ppb) for PCE. OSHA has set the permissible exposure limit to 100 ppm for Perc. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health lists Perc as a potential occupational carcinogen and advises the “lowest feasible exposure”. California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board has regulated the workplace PEL to 25 ppm for Perc.
The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists has recommended a threshold limit value of 25 ppm for Perc.
Methylene chloride (MeCl, DCM, dichloromethane, methylene dichloride) – The National Toxicology Program classifies MeCl as “reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen.” MeCl is listed as a carcinogen under California Prop 65. Under the Safe Drinking Water Act, EPA restricted the maximum contaminant level to 0.005 mg/L (5ppb) for MeCl. OSHA has set the permissible exposure limit to 25 ppm for MeCl. The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health lists MeCl as an occupational carcinogen and advises the “lowest feasible exposure”. California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board has regulated the workplace PEL to 25 ppm for MeCl. The American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists has recommended a threshold limit value of 50 ppm for MeCl.
